Why this hour exists

Most students of this college read English better than they speak it. You have studied it for ten years and you can follow a written page. But asked to say three sentences aloud, you stop.

That is not a failure of intelligence and it is not a failure of your schooling. It is a lack of practice, and it is the only thing standing between a lot of our students and a job that they are otherwise fully able to do.

Three rules for this hour

  1. Nobody laughs. Not at an accent, not at a mistake, not at a pause. This rule is absolute and it is the reason the hour works.
  2. Speak, wrongly, rather than stay silent, correctly. A sentence with three mistakes in it has been spoken. A perfect sentence in your head has not.
  3. Kannada is not banned. If you are stuck, say it in Kannada and we will find the English together. Pretending you have no first language helps nobody.

What it is not

It is not an examination, it is not marked, and it does not appear on your certificate. It is on Wednesday and Friday after class, in Room 4, and you may come to one and not the next.
